In September of 1774, before the American Revolution had even begun, the delegates of the First Continental Congress opened their session with a reading from the Psalms. In 1776, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, charged with designing the seal of the new republic, both proposed images drawn from the Book of Exodus. That same year, a Pennsylvania assemblyman named Isaac Norris—the son-in-law of a Hebrew scholar—had already placed a verse from Leviticus on what would become known as the “Liberty Bell.”
